Khatu Shyam Ji: the head that outlives the war

In a small town off the Jaipur-Sikar highway sits the shrine of Barbarika, the Mahabharata warrior who gave away his head before a single arrow flew. Krishna blessed that severed head to be worshipped in his own name until the end of Kaliyuga. Today Khatu draws crowds that rival any pilgrimage in north India, and during the Phalgun Mela the whole town becomes a river of flags and bare feet.

Khatu is a small town in Sikar district, well connected to Jaipur by road. Most pilgrims break the journey at Ringas, the closest railhead, and cover the last leg by shared jeep or taxi.

Dress code & temple rules

No rigid dress code, but modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is expected in the sanctum.

Avoid flashy jewellery and accessories that distract other devotees; keep valuables minimal in the crush.

Footwear is removed before entering; use the shoe-deposit stalls near the gates.

Phones and cameras are restricted inside the inner sanctum; follow queue-line signage and staff.

Nishan (flag) offerings are central here; many pilgrims carry a triangular flag to dedicate to Shyam Baba.

Expect airport-style security and metal detectors, especially on Ekadashi and during the mela.

Barbarika's head is said to have surfaced and become immortal on Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi, which makes late winter the spiritual peak. Ekadashi every fortnight and Fridays-Saturdays draw heavy weekly crowds year round; October to March is the most comfortable window for weather.

Where to stay

Khatu town has grown a dense belt of dharamshalas, budget lodges, and mid-range hotels within walking distance of the temple, many run by community trusts and offering simple rooms for pilgrims. Ringas, the railhead, has additional guesthouses. For more comfort and choice, most travellers base themselves in Sikar (approx 45 km) or Jaipur (approx 80 km) and make Khatu a day trip. During the Phalgun Mela rooms fill months ahead and many pilgrims sleep in tented camps and community shelters, so book early or plan to arrive and leave the same day.
